Chinese Farmers Perplex By Watermelon Explosion

By ONE Liners Agency
May 21, 2011

Watermelon explosion phenomenon in China
CHINA NEWS – Watermelon explosion seems a new agricultural disaster in China where farmers in eastern China region have been baffled by series of watermelon explosions.

In Jiangsu province, farmers are loosing acres of fruit because of sudden explosion of watermelons. Housewives are particularly apprehensive about this phenomenon, fearing that watermelons are not safe to eat. Earlier state media reported melons were administered with a plant growth chemical forchlorfenuron.

But the explosion phenomenon is also reported in chemical-free melons and agricultural experts puzzled and still to find any explanation for that.

It is a common practice in China where farmers spray growth stimulant chemicals for a better promotion. In summers watermelons are ubiquitous in the markets when people prefer watermelons to assuage heat. But this year the harmless fruit has actually given rise to food safety scandal.

Watermelons are ubiquitous in the Beijing summer, when most households keep a chilled melon in the fridge to alleviate the summer heat. But this year the innocuous fruit has given rise to its very own food safety scandal.

Earlier this year, China saw several food safety scandals such tainted port, “recycled” cooking oil, rice laced with heavy metals. Food is a thing to be considered in China after the melamine scandal that poisoned thousands of children with toxic infant formula. Even in urban areas, upper-middle class people grow their own small vegetable plot outside the city to ensure quality.

Himalayan Glaciers Shrinking By 75%: ISRO

Himalayan Glaciers Shrinking
By ONE Liners Agency

The Government of India's primary space research body ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) published a report, showing images of retreating Himalayan glaciers. The satellite images revealed shocking pictures, depicting 75% of Himalayan glaciers were shrinking at a steady pace with average shrinkage rate being 3.75km during the 15 years under study. In 2007, IPCC report said that Himalayan glaciers would be disappeared by 2035, which provoked heavy controversy. ISRO satellite mission to unveil the detail analysis of Himalayan glaciers began after the raging controversy.

The grim finding came after studying 2,190 glaciers broke the myths of disappearance of Himalayan glaciers but undoubtedly raised concern over Asia's 'water towers'.

Dr Ajai, group director, Marine, Geo and Planetary Science Group (MPSG), Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad said that they were now sure about the findings of Himalayan glaciers shrinking, giving an account of 8% have advanced and 17% are stable. He further said that the detail data would publish soon.

The satellite images took by Resourcesat-1 over a period of 15 years (1989-2004). There were about 50 environmentalists, scientists and 14 organizations were involved in the project, including field trips and analysis of other mountainous ranges.

There were three major institutions involved in the study named B Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Kashmir University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. The experts and volunteers also visited the glaciers to make their reports.

The study involved the basins of the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra. It also covered Himalayan parts that spread to China, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan. It is reported that the first time this type of extensive study had been done on Himalayan glaciers. Other mountainous range that have a high percentage of retreat rate are Alps.

ISRO earlier in 2010 revealed a study report on retreating glaciers, involving 1,317 Himalayan glaciers, which said glaciers had retreated by 16% since 1962. The recent satellite images also showed a minute increase in the area under mangroves.

Cholera Outbreak In Haiti, Accusation On UN Peacekeepers

Cholera Outbreak in Haiti
By ONE Liners Agency

The cholera outbreak in Haiti has claimed more than 4,500 lives, resembling a strain that is fast spreading in South Asian country. It has been accused that the strain was introduced into Haiti by UN peacekeepers from Nepal and eventually caused a heavy violent anti-UN riots. However, UN and Nepalese authorities straightly denied the charges.

The United Nation in a declaration said that the report did not produce any conclusive and scientific evidence of a cholera link with UN peacekeepers. Further, the organization blamed a "confluence of circumstances" for the involvement in the outbreak.

Haiti has been suffering from different calamities since early 2010 when a devastating earthquake destroyed a major part of the country. After 10 months of the devastation, the epidemic spread and effected about 300,000 people.

According to a report by UN investigators, the outbreak was caused due human activity, blaming to the contamination of the Meye tributary system, near the Mirebalais camp housing Nepalese peacekeepers.

In its earlier report UN dismissed the report as rumors when it was alleged that the human fecal waste leaked into river systems caused the disease. In the report it gave the green signal to sanitary conditions for Nepalese peacekeepers. Now, in a recent report the panel said the sanitary condition at the base were not adequate and perhaps a cause for contamination.

Nevertheless, Michel Bonnardeaux, a spokesperson for the UN peacekeeping department, told Reuters news agency said the investigation panel didn't find any scientific evidence that proved the outbreak caused by Minustah peacekeepers or the Mirabalais camp.

While the assault was in progress, this IT consultant also drew information from local friends in the area who were online at the same time.

He said in his tweet, "The few people online at this time of the night are saying one of the copters was not Pakistani..."

He continued, "People are saying it was not a technical fault and it was shot down. I heard it CIRCLE 3-4 times above, sounded purposeful."

According to the US officials, the raid was for 40 mins. Athar tweeted two hours later that still a military presence is there in the area.

Athar's biography in Twitter describes him as: "An IT consultant taking a break from the rat-race by hiding in the mountains with his laptops."

Link Between Harry Potter And Osama Bin Laden

By ONE Liners Agency
MONDAY, May 02, 2011

The U.S. war against terrorism has achieved a milestone, the most important milestone with the controversial death of 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. Over the years his death was a suspense as several times rumor spread that Laden has been killed in the mountains and caves of Afghanistan. Parallel to it, connection of Harry Potter series with Laden is also much talked about.

It is learned from reliable websites that the first movie of the Harry Potter series, Sorcerer’s Stone, released in November 2001, just months after 9/11, had similarities with Laden and his terror network. The movie brings to light the ongoing conflict between the little wizard and the evil Voldemort who is bent on killing him.

Earlier known as “He Who Must Not Be Named,” Voldermort was completely an unknown entity. He was much like Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden that has been seen in the last volume of the Potter series in a seismic one-on-one combat.

The final series of the movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, will be on multiplexes this July and it is surly going to profit off the death of Laden. The movie contains complete epic of evil villain and his network of loyal terrorists. Moreover, the Voldemort dies on May 2 in the movie, and Laden's death news was confirmed on May 1st. So, basically it seems a similar story.

The big question - Will moviegoers recognize the similarity of the plot with bin Laden?

Well, one thing to take note here that the book series of "Harry Potter" predates the 9/11 events of 2001.

Internal Auditors Blame World Bank For Slow Progress In East Timor

East Timor Family
By ONE liners Agency

INDONESIA/ EAST TIMOR NEWS - A recent draft, yet to be released publicly revealed a candid evaluation by the World Bank’s internal auditors, saying World Bank has be deficient in helping international organizations trying to help struggling nations. The draft, which particularly blames World Bank for its slow development in East Timor, which freed in 1999 after a long fought independence struggle from Indonesia.

However, the draft also exemplifies the problems caused to international organizations to meet the urgent needs of the nation while ensuring a proper utilization of donor’s money. This took a long and tedious process of evaluation of money, ensuring it is not misspent.

The review is done by the Independent Evaluation Group, which reports directly to the World Bank directors, covers the period from 2000 to 2010. The report also says due to bank own stiff procurement rules, it delayed the opening of four desperately needed hospitals for a year. It is reported that the mortality rate of children in East Timor is highest in Southeast Asia.

The report also blames the bank for not supporting the educational system and postponed to build and repair schools. The bank was also biased about the new government who requested to distribute the teaching materials in Portuguese because it had been the primary language before the Indonesian occupation, when East Timor was a Portuguese colony. The report has stressed on the importance of English or indigenous textbook, which could be more functional.

The report also asserts that the bank overlooked its explicit goal of fighting poverty, providing loan to needy nations for their social projects. In East Timor, the government saved money from its petroleum revenue rather than investing on its social development. As a result it contributed to high levels of poverty.

An estimated 70 percent of East Timor’s economic wealth had been destroyed in years of fighting for independence. At present the poverty in the country as double of Indonesia’s level.

Ferid Belhaj, the World Bank’s director for East Timor declined to comment on the report, saying the evaluation was not final. However, he said that the nation has tremendously improved economically and socially in the past decades.

He said the military would take retaliatory action in pushing out the Cambodian soldiers from disputed areas and also diplomatic measures to be taken to bring Cambodian government to bilateral talks.

By ONE Liners Agency

WORLD NEWS / U.S. NEWS - Countdown has begun for government shutdown in United States after four failed talks in last three days between President Barack Obama and the Senate leaders. What would a federal government shutdown mean to Americans

Social Security - Of course there may be delayed for new enrollees in starting their benefits, but the existing social security checks would remain as normal and continue to be paid.

Medicare - It has been expected to flow as usual says doctors and hospitals. In the 1995 government shutdown, the Medicare payments flowed in normal way for seniors.

Taxes - Still the tax filing date remains the same - April 18. Electronic returns will be processed said Internal Revenue Service. This means the paper returns process would be delayed by the government shutdown. The big question here is whether the department will get refunds promptly with electronic filers. Yet to find out.

Federal Government Employees - The pay of those employees whose salary is funded through annual appropriations may get furloughed. This may not be the case with those employees whose duties qualify as essential.

Federal Government Contractors - Many of the private contractors may go unpaid with this government shutdown and may be until a budget accord is reached.

What would a federal government shutdown mean to U.S. economy

According to many forecasters, the federal government shutdown would not have a big impact on the economy of the nation, if it is assumed that it does not last long. Few says it could cut down investors confidence in the economy. The investors may be more anxious whether Washington is able to manage the finances.

Martin Baily of Brookings Institution wrote recently that the shutdown could have positive impact on investors as they can see a sign "that we as a nation are going to get serious about our addiction to debt."

Asia's Economy Grows Fast Instead Inflation Threat

By ONE Liners Agency

In a recent report published by Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asia economy has forecast to grow strongly though inflation would a big problem to tackle with. According to the report economy is expected to grow by just under 8% in 2011. The annual report says Asia will expand more in next two years.

However, the growth rate of Asian economy would be largely hamper by the inflation, which is the biggest challenge and could lead to social tension.

The report also enumerates the decrease demand of goods and services from recession-hit richer countries.

The ADB's chief economist Changyong Rhee said that the developing countries, mainly from Asian regions fought hard against global recession, and now consolidating its recovery and rapid expansion in the region's two giants - the People's Republic of China and India.

Mr. Rhee was also hopeful that there had been minimal effect of the region's economy irrespective of certain natural disasters such as last month Japan's earthquake.

"Under the assumption there is no further deterioration in the nuclear situation, I really don't think the impact will be that great," He said.

He further said China and India would continue be the driving force for the regional economic recovery as well as global. However, these two regions have experienced slower growth rate compare to other regions.

Mr. Rhee worried about the inflation, which could be the biggest hurdle for policy makers in the regions. He also said that the inflation would be accelerate because of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the nuclear crisis in Japan, and subsequently there are high possibility of increase in oil price.

The report also emphasizes on just tighter monetary policy to control inflation, but stresses on flexible exchange rates.

It is reported that in 45 Asian economies inflation rises to 5.3% in 2011, from 4.4% in 2010. The report also warned about social unrest due to high price rise of essential commodities.
