After the recent Supreme Court decision affirming the First-Amendment right of a Christian hate-group, Westboro Baptist Church, to picket the funerals of soldiers, I signed up with the Patriot Guard Riders of New York, a "diverse group of patriots who come together to show support to US service members, veterans, and their families... The only thing we all have in common is a deep feeling of appreciation of the sacrifices that our military and first responders make." We're part of the national PGR movement who say, "We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect."
This is my kind of motorcycle gang! In my introductory post to the welcoming new members forum, I said, "My 250 Nighthawk won't add much metal to the mission, but my spirit's mettle is committed to honoring all who have served."
Saturday morning (very early) we had the honor of escorting Army Spc. Jesse Smith, of Hopewell Junction, NY, to the Westchester County Airport. Specialist Smith is returning to Afghanistan, serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. (All PGR missions are undertaken only at the request of the family.) I rode with a small contingent from Yorktown Heights to the airport, where I joined the flag line. He and his family were effusive in their gratitude for our presence, but it was we who felt privileged. Jesse will be in my prayers.
