India's Capital Witness Icy Winds, Mercury Dips 3.7 Deg C

INDIA NEWS - The entire North India shivered today, including national capital New Delhi, under intense cold wave which has claimed thirteen more lives. The mercury level continues to be under sub-zero levels in the hills of the this part of the country.

In Allahabad, city of Uttar Pradesh state, the mercury went below 3 dec C that has left 8 people dead. It is first time in seven years in the city that mercury has dipped so down in the first week of January.

From other parts of Uttar Pradesh state, 5 more deaths were reported that includes two in Jaunpur and Pratapgarh, and one in Barabanki.

In Churk (Uttar Pradesh), lowest temperation of the state was recorded. The mercury dipped to 0.6 deg c.

It was minimum 4 deg C in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, and maximum was 16.6 deg C.

In the national capital, icy wind is blowing making the day bone-chilling. The minimum temperature dropped to 3.7 deg C and the maximum was 12 deg C.

The Leh town of Kashmir experienced the minimum of minus 20 deg C. The Gulmarg skiing resort recorded minus 9.2 deg C as minimum. Tourist resort at Pahalgam recorded minimum temperature of minus 7.7 deg C.

Gateway town to Kashmir Valley, Qazigund, witnessed a freezing temperature of minus 8.4 deg C and Anantnag district's Kokernag town experienced a temperature of as low as minus 7.5 deg C.

INDIA NEWS – Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010 (New Delhi) can’t even escape the wrath of former players. In a recent expulsion, former Hockey Olympian Aslam Sher Khan has accused Commonwealth organizers for corruption. While talking to journalists he said the game was surrounded by corruption. He intensified his statement by declaring it a record breaking Commonwealth Games corruption has ever been witnessed by the world. He also accused the baton in England.

"I have been told that Rs. 28,000 crore has been spent on the games, and I feel that this was a colossal waste and nothing else," he added.

He lamented that the government had spent a huge lump sum of 280 billion rupees for the Games when the aspiring athletes are looking at government with parched hope. He said even the basic facilities were not provided for the players, be it on or off the field.

He said it was a wrong priority of the Government of India to organize such corrupt event, whereas one balloon was hired for two hours for 40 crores rupees. On the other hand budding players are dying of want of a little help from the government.

He also strongly condemned Union Sports Minister M S Gill for asking wrestling coach Satpal to stand aside in a photo session with World Championship gold-medalist winner Sushil Kumar in New Delhi.

"Maybe Gill wanted to show to the world that he was to be credited for the medal won by Sushil Kumar and Satpal had nothing to do with it," Aslam said.

The Commonwealth Games 2010 will be India’s grandest sporting extravaganza since the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi. India is expecting about two million visitors and 10,000 athletes from 71 teams of Commonwealth Nations. CWG New Delhi will start from October 3 and end on 14 of same month.

Assam - 4 blasts, 8 killed, over 60 injured

INDIA NEWS (Asia): On the eve of India’s PM visit to Assam, terror struck. Assam rocked by 3 blasts and a grenade attack within 5 hours today. The terror attack killed 7 persons and have injured at least 63. All the terror attack was in the Maligaon area.

Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India is going ahead with his trip to the North-Eastern state tomorrow on Tuesday and he will address public meetings in Dispur and in Dibrugarh as a scheduled marking his entry into the poll campaign trail. The news comes from PMO sources in New Delhi. Manmohan Singh represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha.

ULFA and another group is suspected for the spate of attacks that came a day before the 30th 'foundation day' of ULFA.

According to The Times of India, Assam DGP G M Srivastav said 7 people were killed and 56 injured when a powerful bomb blast went off in a crowded market in Maligaon in Dishpur, capital of Assam, at around 2:00 pm (IST). The explosion sparked a fire in which 2 cars and 20 motorcycles set ablaze and spread to a 3-storey building housing the area police station.

6 people were killed at the blast site and 1 succumbed to injuries after jumping from an adjacent building which had caught fire. It is suspected that the bomb had been hidden in a car or a motorcycle parked adjacent to the Northeast Frontier railway headquarters.
