Google Panda Slaps Tight On UK Tech Sites, Revolutionizing The Playing Turf

By STAFF Reporter
May 03, 2011

SEO is an inexact science and in recent times, owing to mushrooming web-pages, and exponential growth in Internet technology, search engines have been facing lots of problem in indexing pages. In fact, the ground reality is, search engine has become increasingly irritating because of unwarranted websites top the chart. Just type “SEO” on Google, and it will present you 576 million results, and ironically most of them do not have specific information on it.

Search engine optimization is a big business and frequently Google (who has the monopoly over Internet domain) when alter its ranking algorithms – which they do often – most websites catch sneeze under the diseased term called “metrics”.

The latest algorithm metrics nicknamed the “Panda Updates” has passed a shock wave much into the crowd of SEO marketers. This results a drastic change in their websites ranking and of course profit.

Many prominent UK tech sites have suffered from this recent “Google dance”, dropping their rankings drastically, demoting the sites because of unscrupulous means of writing contents and other several factors. The update has also affected on the European Commission, Microsoft-owned Ciao, which will virtually vanish from search results because of downgrading.

On the other hand, many sites such as Google’s own YouTube as well as other tech sites such as Techcrunch and Mashable and newspaper websites such Mirror and The Independent gets benefited with the Panda Update.

How often Google algorithm play its part?

You can expect future sweeping and effect could be drastic because Google more often change in its algorithm several times a year. Most of the times changes are subtle and affect on websites are long term rather short term jerks.

Basically backlinks are the strongest way to promote your sites. These are a sort of “vote of confidence” and search engine looks for how many actually vote for you.

The recent Panda Update dismisses those sites, which are made by tools such as autoblogging or for the sole purpose of using AdSense. A site with overflowing ads actually ranks low and gets a severe slap by the Panda.

To Make Panda Happy

  • Do not link to low quality sites. It’s better not to be linked with poor quality site than get a backlink from a low ranked site. Google considers it as a matter of negative relationship.
  • Focus backlinks from high quality sites of your niche. Directory and article submission are also worthy but of high quality.
  • Its better to focus primarily on content because in recent algorithm it has been experimented that a good quality, genuine content will rise to the ladder easily rather than high quantity though scrapped from other sites. Also, attach a blog to your site; blogs are the best way to keep your site fresh. Moreover, Google gives special attention to blogs.
  • Best to build your brand and to know and to be known is Social Media. It is the best way to share your value.

Based on the research it is found that the Google algorithm is accurate at pinpointing sites quality. Therefore, if you have the conviction your site is of high quality, it will surely be impacted with the Panda.

When Panda will not be impressed with you?

  1. Duplicate content is the worst enemy of Panda. This can be applied to a page, a site or in worst cases both. Even poorly rewritten content is also an irritation for Panda.
  1. A high percentage of pages with low quality and duplicate content.
  1. Inappropriate adverts can also put your site on the low pedestal.
  1. Black or grey hat SEO technique such as a page is optimized with different keywords and not matched between page content and search queries.
  1. Unwarranted use of heavy-duty keywords during on-page SEO.
  1. High bounce rate.
  1. Minimum time stay.
  1. High percentage of boilerplate content.
  1. Low or no quality inbound links.
  1. No mention or links from social media or other high rated sites.

Google Instant Becomes Instant Hit

Google Instant, Instant Search By Google
By ONE Liners Agency

Google speeds up with its new product Google Instant. Announced Wednesday by CEO Eric Schmidt at the IFA show in Berlin, Google Instant is the new definition of its search engine.

Google shifts the fundamental of searching with Google Instant. Instead of thinking search as an outcome, Google tries to make people think search to be a process. In Google Instant you constantly refine your query without 'searching' actually, or hitting the 'enter' button.

Google bets that this is the world of instant communication, so why not the search engine be instant. The Google Instant will produce a search with every keystroke. Not only this, even the sponsored links will change with every keystroke.

Schmidt said in his keynote address in Berlin, "We're trying very hard to get you something fast... Never underestimate the power of fast. Quick, quick, quick-we want to help you right now." Later in the speech, he also spoke of Google understanding what users want before they've even asked for it, in almost psychic-like fashion: "We can understand things like what you really meant."

Google Instant is surely the biggest change in Google. The moment one types anything, the page produces information and the button of "I'm Feeling Lucky" vanishes. The Instant, technically speaking, is something unquestionably amazing.

Google Instant tries to understand what is in your mind and show suggestions accordingly. So, no need to finish typing and no need to hit the enter button with Google Instant.

Google Accused of Betraying Internet Golden Rule in Net Neutrality Row

THE TELEGRAPH: Google, the internet giant, has been accused of betraying one of the most widely accepted "laws" of the internet called net neutrality; the principle that everyone has equal access.

The firm has admitted that it has been in talks with the US communications provider Verizon and even agreed an outline plan on how internet traffic should be carried over networks.

However, many have already voiced fears that if the plan becomes public, it could serve as a blueprint for how to carve up the internet and sell the best performance to the highest bidder.

Some critics have described it as "doomsday scenario" that "marks the beginning of the end of the internet as you know it".

Google said discrimination is permissible in some circumstances.

The principle of net neutrality was one of the founding ideas of the web.

Gigi Sohn, president of Public Knowledge, a digital rights campaign group, said: "The deal between Verizon and Google about how to manage internet traffic is deeply regrettable and should be considered meaningless.

"The fate of the internet is too large a matter to be decided by negotiations involving two companies."

Josh Silver, president of Free Press, a media reform group, wrote a piece in the Huffington Post and warned: "Since its beginnings, the Net was a level playing field that allowed all content to move at the same speed, whether it's ABC News or your uncle's video blog.

"That's all about to change, and the result couldn't be more bleak for the future of the Internet, for television, radio and independent voices." >>> Andy Bloxham | Friday, August 06, 2010

Sen. Franken: Stop the Corporate Takeover of the Media

A Note to Google Users on Net Neutrality *:

The Internet as we know it is facing a serious threat. There's a debate heating up in Washington, DC on something called "net neutrality" – and it's a debate that's so important Google is asking you to get involved. We're asking you to take action to protect Internet freedom.

In the next few days, the House of Representatives is going to vote on a bill that would fundamentally alter the Internet. That bill, and one that may come up for a key vote in the Senate in the next few weeks, would give the big phone and cable companies the power to pick and choose what you will be able to see and do on the Internet.

Today the Internet is an information highway where anybody – no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional – has equal access. But the phone and cable monopolies, who control almost all Internet access, want the power to choose who gets access to high-speed lanes and whose content gets seen first and fastest. They want to build a two-tiered system and block the on-ramps for those who can't pay.

Creativity, innovation and a free and open marketplace are all at stake in this fight. Please call your representative (202-224-3121) and let your voice be heard.

Thanks for your time, your concern and your support.

Google Pays Gay Workers Extra

THE TELEGRAPH: Google has begun paying extra to its gay employees in the US to compensate them for additional taxes on their benefits.

The search engine giant yesterday adjusted the pay packets of employees in same sex relationships to offset income tax they have to pay on health insurance for their partners[.]

Gay couples have also been given the same rights as heterosexuals to take off from work for family or medical reasons, Cynthia Yeung of the Google's strategic development team said in a blog post.

The company has strong gay representation, with nearly 300 "Googlers' marched in San Francisco's 40th annual Pride parade on Sunday.

"We braved the rain in Boston, enjoyed the sun in New York, rode a trolley in Chicago and marched with the Israel Gay Youth Organization in Tel Aviv and Haifa," Ms Yeung said of Google workers taking part in such celebrations.

"Googlers will be participating in EuroPride, held in Poland this year, as well as many other parades, including Tokyo for the first time. And we'll be celebrating Pride season in Singapore too." >>> | Thursday, July 01, 2010
Google Moves into Travel Business with ITA Purchase

THE TELEGRAPH: Google has agreed to acquire ITA, a flight information software company for $700 million in cash, in a bid to enter the lucrative digital travel market.

Photobucket
Image: The Telegraph

The search giant is hoping that the cash acquisition, the fourth largest in its history, will allow it to create bespoke search tools focused on travel. ITA, which has been in existence for 14 years, aggregates and organises information it gathers from travel agents and airlines, including flight times, ticket prices and availability.

However, the deal needs approval by the US competition authorities, as the acquisition would bring together the world’s largest search engine with one of the biggest pieces of travel search software. >>> Emma Barnett, Technology and Digital Media Correspondent | Friday, July 02, 2010

Google Translate in Punjabi

It seems my little vacation has been cut short by events.  Two new posts today.  Both good news.

First, I have been looking for a way to translate this blog into Punjabi for nearly four years.  Now there might be a way.  It's a long shot, but then my being here typing this is statistically impossible and here I am.

Google has a really cool service called "Google Translate" which translates web pages from one language to another very quickly.  So now when I get a Spanish or German or even Chinese.  But not Punjabi.  This must be corrected!

There is currently a petition to get Punjabi covered by Google Translate.  Google has a reputation of listening to its users. It is totally nonpolitical.  All it says is:

We would like 'Google Translate' to create a language Punjabi. All the signatures, are willing to use this feature, if created.

Please sign it at:
