WASHINGTON - The seven-year longer Iraq war is over - declared United States President Barack Obama Tuesday. The president said the United States has completed its mission in Iraq and now more focused on problems in the home turf.
In a prime time address from the Oval Office, Mr. Obama praised the troops who were engaged in long tough battles, admitting, though not direct, Iraq war was a mistake at a first place. He emphasized on the fragile economy and domestic issues in Iraq and said he wanted to get aloof from Afghan war.
“We have sent our young men and women to make enormous sacrifices in Iraq, and spent vast resources abroad at a time of tight budgets at home,” Mr. Obama said. “Through this remarkable chapter in the history of the United States and Iraq, we have met our responsibility. Now, it’s time to turn the page.”
Mr. Obama spoke for at about 18 minutes, praising US soldiers, their families and pointed out the role would be played by US to maintain the economy of Iraq. He said violence would continue in Iraq and US would play in active role to support a stable government. He proclaimed American fighting forces as “the steel in our ship of state,” and pledged to be as active against Al Qaeda.
He said as a President of United States his responsibility to look after dominant issues of home.
As a matter of fact, his party is facing a threat to loose control of Congress in this fall's elections and his own credibility has fallen drastically due to lackluster economy and growing unemployment among US citizens.
America has already spent over a trillion dollars at war and this is the high time to wrap up forces from Iraqi land and face the domestic challenges. It is reported that since Mr. Hussein toppled from his throne, the war claimed at least 400 American soldiers and more than 70,000 Iraqis.
