AUSTRALIA NEWS - The Archbishop of Melbourne in a new guidelines has banned pop songs and sports anthems in Catholic funerals.
In a statement, Dennis Hart, the Archbishop said that a Catholic funeral is a holy ritual rather a secular celebration and music on celebration must be banned on the occasion.
A study showed that in Australia a football song was one of most sought after anthem at Melbourne funerals. Based on the study the Archbishop issued the statement.
The move has invited a mixed reaction among Australians. The guidelines have already sent to more than 200 parishes in the Melbourne area. It said that during funeral wishes and prayers should be conducted by their friends and family. Nevertheless, the celebration if happens it must be at some special occasion before or after the funeral.
"Secular items are never to be sung or played at a Catholic funeral, such as romantic ballads, pop or rock music, political songs, football club songs," he adds.
the signature anthem for Australian Rules football team Collingwood along with Frank Sinatra's My Way and Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World are the most demanding songs during funerals in Australia.
