China – A catastrophic torrent hit northwest China’s Gansu province, triggering massive landslide that claimed at least 80 people and others 2000 missing. An official report said.
The landslide occurred at around 12 am on Sunday and official confirmed that more than 80 people died and 2000 others are missing.
"Torrential rains began at around 10 pm on Saturday, then there were landslides," Xinhua quoted Diemujiangteng, head of the county, as saying.
"Many people were trapped. Now the sludge has become the biggest problem. It's too thick to walk or drive through," he said.
The massive flood has affected the lives of more than 50,000 citizens as the torrent submerged half of the region. Adding insult to the injury, due to landslide many houses buried under it.
Some eyewitnesses said that the torrential rain even submerged fifth floor of the house. And with the landslide, havoc created and people were looking for their family and friends.
Peng Wei, head of the county's fire department said that the Bailong River passed through the valley, therefore, flood hit nasty. All cars in the yard damaged and collapsed houses formed a sort of barrier to the flood.
