PHILIPPINES – A communist attack by rebels of New People's Army (NPA) killed eight policemen and a local officials Sunday. The attack was deeply condemned by Philippines government, saying it would only weakens the prospect of dialog between government and rebels.
"Such attacks by the NPA undermine the aspirations of our people for peace and make the way forward more difficult," President Benigno Aquino's chief peace adviser Teresita Deles told reporters.
The NPA is active since 1969, an armed wing of Communist Party of the Philippines who is engaging in the longest communist insurgencies. The rebel first murdered a government official and then killed investigating policemen.
"The attack by the NPA on police officers on a law enforcement mission in Northern Samar yesterday is condemnable," Deles said.
Deles concerned about the reports of landmine used by the rebels, which they stole from the policemen. She further added that it was a true violation of humanity.
Earlier NPA denied any ceasefire that was asked by the President as a condition of resuming dialog. NPA has about 5000 rebel members who conduct rebellion across the country from decades. They devastating protest against government cost several lives and military is still to curb them.
