Food Waste Contributes To Global Warming

Food Wastage Contributed Carbon Emission
Are you a clean eater? Or leave chunks in your plate after finishing your meal? Perhaps it matters none or less to you but from a global environmental perspective, it holds water. In an astonishing report published by WWF-UK and the UK government’s Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has exposed the impact of food waste on country’s carbon emission and water footprint. According to the report, significantly avoidable food waste contributes to the usage of 64 gallons of water per person per day and 727.5 pounds of CO2 per person per year.

It translates food waste in UK actually result around 6 percent of the UK’s water footprint and 3 percent of its carbon emissions. That’s actually in a rough estimation 25 percent of more vehicles on roads.

Food waste is not an eyebrow raising subject for many, but amount of food waste people around the world do, is indeed shameful. It is considered as one of the most unsustainable aspects of high-consumption lifestyle. Understanding the significance of it, and taking small steps to improve on it, will lead to a better sustainable environment.

Let us see the amount of food waste in two major economical nations in the world.

Food Wastage in United States

A commonly quoted figure shows 40 percent food waste happens in the United States. A report published by EPA for statistics in the year 2009 shows a staggering amount of CO2 emission comes directly from agriculture. 53 million tons from food waste in landfill, which contribute to 20 percent of total. Food waste in US contributes to a total of 260 million tones of CO2 emissions and 4.4 percent of the nation’s cumulative carbon footprint.

The rate of water footprint in US is low, it just measure 58 percent of US 696 billion cubic meters/year water footprint comes from agriculture. It is significantly low as compared to other developed nations. Nevertheless, the food waste results a high usage of country total water consumption. If we measure it in terms of per person usage, it goes to 420 gallons per person per day.

Food Wastage in China

In a report published by the Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, in 2009, showing in China around 62 million tons of food waste went to landfill. Another report from National Bureau of Statistics showed the country consumed 905 million tons of food in 2004. It means the 7 percent of total food production has been wasted, and this is surely a significant figure.

It is reported that in China agriculture contributes around 14 percent of country’s overall carbon emission. The rate of food waste is much lower than US, contributing only 66 million tones CO2, or 1 percent emission from food waste in landfill. Due to lower food wastage, the usage of amount per person is also lower.

The reports show food waste in a country has an affect on its carbon emissions and water footprint. If we judiciously consume our food, we can also significantly contribute to safe our environment.

US Physics Professor: 'Global Warming Is the Greatest and Most Successful Pseudoscientific Fraud I Have Seen in My Long Life'

THE TELEGRAPH – BLOG – JAMES DELINGPOLE – AN EXTRACT: Dear Curt:
When I first joined the American Physical Society sixty-seven years ago it was much smaller, much gentler, and as yet uncorrupted by the money flood (a threat against which Dwight Eisenhower warned a half-century ago). Indeed, the choice of physics as a profession was then a guarantor of a life of poverty and abstinence—it was World War II that changed all that. The prospect of worldly gain drove few physicists. As recently as thirty-five years ago, when I chaired the first APS study of a contentious social/scientific issue, The Reactor Safety Study, though there were zealots aplenty on the outside there was no hint of inordinate pressure on us as physicists. We were therefore able to produce what I believe was and is an honest appraisal of the situation at that time. We were further enabled by the presence of an oversight committee consisting of Pief Panofsky, Vicki Weisskopf, and Hans Bethe, all towering physicists beyond reproach. I was proud of what we did in a charged atmosphere. In the end the oversight committee, in its report to the APS President, noted the complete independence in which we did the job, and predicted that the report would be attacked from both sides. What greater tribute could there be?

How different it is now. The giants no longer walk the earth, and the money flood has become the raison d’ĂȘtre of much physics research, the vital sustenance of much more, and it provides the support for untold numbers of professional jobs. For reasons that will soon become clear my former pride at being an APS Fellow all these years has been turned into shame, and I am forced, with no pleasure at all, to offer you my resignation from the Society.

It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist. Anyone who has the faintest doubt that this is so should force himself to read the ClimateGate documents, which lay it bare. (Montford’s book organizes the facts very well.) I don’t believe that any real physicist, nay scientist, can read that stuff without revulsion. I would almost make that revulsion a definition of the word scientist. Global Warming Threatens Rice Growth: Study

A Recent study has revealed that global warming could hamper the growth of rice. They advised farmers to implement innovative farming management techniques and switch over to more heat tolerant varieties.

Rice production slow down would affect billions of people worldwide as it the most important crop and staple diet for almost half the population of world. A drop in production could result in food scarcity, exponential price rise and in a worse case famine.

The study was conducted by a team of researchers from University of California, San Diego. The study also enumerated that yielding of rice slow down at night temperature as it has been witnessed that due to rise in global temperature night temperature is gradually increasing. However, researchers are still in doubt about the exact reason of drop in night temperature.

"With few exceptions, most statistical studies on temperature and rice yield have focused on the impact of daily mean temperature," the team says in the study, published online in the latest issue of the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Earlier study said that a high temperature could be beneficial for rice production, but to the point and after that yielding would hamper. Nevertheless, the study revealed that higher night temperature would perilously harmful for rice production or totally wipes out any grains.

The new research depends on the IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) data, which has covered six year (1994-1999) in countries like China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and India.

The data covered six years from 1994-1999 based on a major study by IRRI on the productivity of intensively managed irrigated rice farms in China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and India.

Join in demonstrating against the latest Israeli assault on the people of Gaza. At least 400 Palestinians have been killed and at least 1600 have been injured in the on-going assault on the Gaza Strip that began on Saturday.

This is the single largest massacre in Gaza since Israel illegally occupied the area in 1967. The numbers of dead are mounting, especially as the already limited medical supplies are running out due to the brutal siege of Gaza since 2005.

The Sikh Activist Network stands in solidarity with our Palestinian brothers ands sisters. It is our duty to oppose these inhumane, unjust, and brutal attacks against Gaza.

Members of the network will be meeting at Palestine house and bussing down (buses leave at 1:15pm sharp).

Please email sikhactivist@gmail.com or respond to this message if you have any questions or concerns.

Do you Know that Israel has Restarted Slaughtering innocent Gaza People by Recent Arial Attacks?
Israel launched a sudden air attack on Gaza and killed more than 300 people and still continuing
Israel is a great challenge for , humanity and democracy. It is fortified with world super-power, US and its allies and many Multi-national companies
which dedicatedly pouring their profits in supporting the world terrorist, the child killer - Israel.
This is very clear truth. There are clear track record to prove that following companies strive to bring up Israel and establish the Zionist country in our holy land Let's forget about our favorite brands. We sacrifice our tastes for the sake of Innocent Palestinians who are squeezed under Israeli onslught.

Let's swear that we will never use following products in our life :

It is our turn. We have to do our part. No point of blaming Arabs who doesn't care about Palestinians. We will be questioned by Allah, therfore, we should have done something to answer him.
OK, most readers of this blog are Sikhs and we do not answer to Allah. So ask this question: What would Guru Gobind Singh want you to do? Then please do that! Then go to the post under this - to be up soon - and follow the links there.

No, I changed my mind. This post needs to get up now. The pictures, other than these four will be in the next post about The Palestinian Chronicle. It will be published under this one, as I want this to be on top until tomorrow morning. >
