Harsh West Bank `honor killing' brings tougher law (AP)

Palestinian Fatma Baradiya, the mother of Aya, holds a picture of her daughter as she talks during an interview with the Associated Press, at her home in the West Bank town of Surif, near Hebron, Thursday, May 19, 2011. A 20-year-old English literature student who was thrown into a well in the name of 'family honor' did not just become another statistic in one of the Middle East's most shameful practices. The killing of Aya Baradiya, by an uncle who didn't like a potential suitor, sparked such outrage that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas this week scrapped laws guaranteeing leniency for killers.
