12. Islamic Banking Can Push the National Growth
Source: Antaranews, Wednesday, April 20, 2011 18:40 pm

Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), Halim Alamsyah, said that the Islamic banking industry is currently growing rapidly in Indonesia to contribute to national economic growth.

"This is because Islamic banking activities are not governed by market mechanisms as occurred in the U.S., and the government have involvement in maintaining kemashlatan people," he said in opening the seminar on Islamic banking BI in Yogyakarta on Wednesday.

He explained that Islamic banking industry can also promote the creation of financial system stability as forbade speculation activities smelling shadow banking or financial system by separating the real sector.

"Islamic banking industry prohibit the activities of smell because they have no underlying speculation. And the industry without any linkage with the real sector, can lead to bubble," he said.

According to Halim, sharia-based banking industry started to grow in 2008 with the advent of Act 21 of 2008 and the opening of the securities markets of Islamic countries (SBSN country, or sukuk).

"Since then it started to grow a conducive environment for the growth of Islamic financial markets and non-financial institutions to develop better," he said.

Currently, based on data in February 2011, there are 11 Islamic Banks, 23 Unit 151 Bank Financing Sharia and Islamic Peoples (SRB) with total assets of Rp104 trillion.

However, Islamic banking market share at the end of 2010 accounted for only 3.3 percent of the overall banking market share nationally.

The amount is expected to increase because Indonesia is one country with the largest Muslim population in the world.

"We expect to more than 3.3 percent. By the end of 2011 target to reach 3.6 to 3.7 percent due to the accretion of six Islamic banks, Islamic unit of SRB and the newly formed," he said.

Halim want a seminar attended by many experts of national and global Islamic banking can address the problems of Islamic banking issues emerging in Indonesia and global level.

Professor of Banking and Financial Regulation Maximilian JB Hall, Loughborough University of British Islamic banking industry adds to survive the global crisis because it is not associated with the market mechanism and without speculation.

He added that in 2010 the growth of global Islamic banking assets reached 8.9 percent with total assets of 900 billion U.S. dollars.

"The amount is increased more than double the growth rate in 2006," he said.

According to him, the growth of Islamic banking in Indonesia can be further increased and grew significantly as long as the supporting infrastructure to promote the program as well as syariah instruments can be realized.

"Islamic banking industry to grow if there is a means of supporting infrastructure, thereby enhancing economic growth and alleviating poverty by providing credit for poor families," said Maximilian.

Especially at this time, he continued from the Islamic world's population of 1.6 billion people is only about 12 percent of it using instruments of Islamic banking. (*)
