"Holy Humor Sunday" -- May 1

For centuries, the days after Easter were observed as days of joy and laughter in church with celebrations of Jesus’ resurrection. Parishioners and pastors played practical jokes on each other, drenched each other with water, sang, and danced. It was a time for clergy to tell jokes and to have fun. Easter was the supreme joke played on death, and the powers that be. The joy of this season points us toward the grace of God. If we can’t laugh in church, why would we want to go?

Church people are always sending me jokes, and even a few that push the margins. This is a chance to trot out some of them. You'll have a time to share your own favorites. I encourage you not use any language you don't hear on South Park, and let's agree we won't diminish anyone (except perhaps the pastor) with our humor.

Let's play "dress-up," with fun, fancy clothing, hats, etc. Think of the early-morning crowds you see in NYC for GMA's weather forecast, or the studio audiences on "The Price is Right." By now you're used to seeing your interim pastor in a variety of outfits. I don't yet know what I'll be wearing, so let's be surprised.

--Jack Lohr, Interim Pastor
