Christmas is Coming!
This Christmas cactus was in the manse when we moved in last summer. It was stuck in a glass of water and looked nearly dead. Janice potted it, watered it and tended it. And just last week we noticed the most amazing bloom! How does it know this is Advent? A cold calculation of the number of hours of daylight? Or (as I imagine) a sensitivity to the spiritual seasons?
This past Sunday, in the Time with Children, I showed the children a "resurrection plant" which they rated 2-1 as likely to be dead. (It looked like a dry "hairy nut.") After 30 minutes in water, it had opened up and begun to green. Truly "the desert shall rejoice, and blossom like the rose..."
That's our hope and joy in these days.
