tried listening to the new joanna newsom today but only made it about 1/3 of the way through. it just felt so exhausting, i think it has something to do with how theatrical the arrangements are, if that makes any sense. it sounds like she keeps trying to make these big statements musically, but i can't figure out what the statements are because it's not making an emotional connection. sure, there are lots of musical signals on it that say "pretty" but that's about all i'm getting from it right now. maybe i need to listen a few times and see if my opinion changes? it's obviously a work of a talented individual, but maybe i'm just not the intended audience?
i really like "milk eyed mender" so it seems like i owe joanna newsom another few listens. anyhow, i know it's kinda silly to be writing a half assed non-review of the album when i haven't listened to the whole thing, but since everybody else on the internet is saying what they think...
