Naomi Klein is coming to Sonoma State University. Author of “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism,” Klein is scheduled to deliver a lecture from her international bestseller at 7:30 p.m.Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cooperage on campus.

In “The Shock Doctrine,” Klein details a theory of what she calls disaster capitalism – the rapid-fire corporate reengineering of societies still reeling from shock. It’s a strategy that did not begin on September 11, 2001, she said.

The book traces the strategy’s origins back 50 years, to the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman, which produced many of the leading neo-conservative and neo-liberal thinkers whose influence is still profound in Washington today, according to SSU.

New connections are drawn between economic policy, “shock and awe” warfare and covert CIA-funded experiments in electroshock and sensory deprivation in the 1950s, research that helped write the torture manuals used today in Guantanamo Bay, according to SSU.

Klein’s speech is expected to address the key points of her bestselling book, along with her perspective on what it means for the future.

Presented by Associated Students Productions, this event is free to SSU students, faculty and staff. General admission is $15. Tickets are available at the Student Union front desk, (707) 664-2382.

Copies of her book will be available for purchase at the event and Klein will be available for autographs.
