Suu Kyi Calls Verdict ‘Totally Unfair’

Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi criticized the recent verdict against her and plans to challenge the court’s decision, according to a spokesperson for her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said that the verdict was ‘totally unfair’ and ‘totally illogical,’” NLD spokesperson Nyan Win told The Irrawaddy on Thursday. Daw is a respectful term for a woman.

“We spoke about her appeal and that of her two companions. But we need to wait for documents from the court before we can proceed,” said Nyan Win, who met with Suu Kyi yesterday to discuss the outcome of her trial.

Suu Kyi, a 64-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was found guilty on Tuesday of violating the terms of her previous house arrest by allowing an uninvited American who swam to her home to stay for two days.

She initially received a three-year prison sentence, but that was immediately commuted to 18 months under house arrest. The suspended sentence was also applied to the verdict against Suu Kyi’s two companions, Win Ma Ma and Khin Khin Win.

Suu Kyi has already spent nearly 14 of the past 20 years under house arrest, although Tuesday’s conviction was the first time she had been found guilty of any offense.

Until her conviction on Tuesday, she had spent more than two months in Rangoon’s notorious Insein Prison. She is now back in her home, where security has been beefed up, said Nyan Win.

“The authorities are erecting a new barbed-wire fence around Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s home,” he said.
